herald v. telegraph.

This match was played at Petane yesterday, and resulted in a victory for the Herald. The Telegraph team won the toss, and sent their opponents to the sticks. The Herald men went to work with a will, and put together 85 before they could be disposed of. The Telegraph team were weak in bowlers,

not being able to make any change. The two boys, however, trundled well, and did their side good service. The fielding was loose, but, considering that the team bad never played together before, they worked well together ; everyone worked energetically, and struggled hard for victory. After an hour's interval for luncheon the

Telegraph men went in, but only sue-

ceeded in running up 58. O'Regan being top scorer with 13, Williams following him close with 12. In their second innings the Herald men thoroughly mastered the bowling, and held the wickets until 120 went up. Mullany played a capital innings of 42, made by free all round hitting; Johnston was credited with 19, Young with 15, and Lawrence with 11. This left tbe Telegraph men 148 to get to win, which they bad all the will to get, but after scoring 11 for the loss of one wicket time was called, and, it being a one day'a match, tbe victory

remained with the Herald on the first innings. Mr Villers catered for the two teams and their friends in bis usual liberal manner. About one o'clock over thirty sat down to a first-rate feed, so good, in fact, that we think it must have accounted in some measure for the 120 scored by the Herald team soon afterwards.
