AUCKLAND.

April 8

Messrs Ireland Brothers Panmure tannery, the largest and most extensive in New Zealand, was totally destroyed by fire this morning. When the fire was discovered the flames had a firm hold of the buildings, and nothing could be done to save them or the goods stored in them.

Nothing is known regarding the origin of the fire. The total loss is estimated at £20,000, and the insurances so far are unkuown. Amongst the property destroyed were 6000 sides of leather, 18 bales of basils, 600 calves skins, 3,600 hides, 300 tons of bark, and 3,600 gallons of cod oil. The tannery, which did a large business, gave employment to eighty men.

The Auckland Jockey Club held a meeting to-day re the " stiffening" of Golden Crown in the Panmure Handicap. The club, after hearing the evidence, decided to disqualify the horse, its owner Byers, and his son, the jockey, from running on any course under the Jockey Club rules for ever. The insurances on Ireland's tannery are very heavy, chiefly in the New Zealand office, but the amount is not yet exactly ascertained. The Union office has a reinsurance policy of £700, and the North British £1000.

The New Zealand office bad a policy of £7600 on Ireland's tannery, but most of it was re-insured. The following are the approximate losses of the various companies involved . — New Zealand, £3500: Union, £700; Standard, £350; National, £350; Transatlantic, £800; Victoria. £320; Northern British, £700.
