WAIPAWA COUNTY COUNCIL.

THURSDAY, APRIL 7.

Present: Councillors Johnston (chairman), Rathbone, Smith, Levy, Dillon, White, Mackersey, Herrick, and Gaisford.

A special meeting was first held to consider Cr. Smith's notice of motion regarding his proposed alteration of the boundaries of the Waipukurau riding. An animated discussion ensued, in which each of the members present took the majority holding views, antagonistic to Cr. Smith's motion, which, on being ultimately put to the meeting, was lost. The ordinary meeting then took place, and the following business was transacted:— . .'

Letter received from Mr H. R. Guon, Napier, offering to supply nine-inch pipes to the Council at 2s each. Matter referred to the road overseer, with an instruction to institute further enquiries as to prices asked for different sizes, &ci

Consideration of a circular emanating from the Manawatu Council was postponed to next meeting. A letter from the County Solicitor wm read, in which he stated that the Council has no powers to fix permanent - levels at Woodviile township, as requested by the ratepayers of that place. ..'".-. A sum of £12 was voted to be spent on clearing the road leading to McDonald's property, Victoria Settlement, Seventy-mile Bush, to enable that enterprising settler to " get his potatoes out."

A long effusion from J. Peterson, chiefly reflecting on the road overseer, was read, and afterwards consigned to its proper place—in the waste-paper basket. A petition for road works, signed by C. Leopold, E. Collins, and other ratepayers at Whakarara, was put aside in order that the overseer might make a report on the matter. The report of the road engineer showed that, with tbe exception of Norsewood riding, necessary works had been carried on in tbe various districts during the month. A number of works were also recommended, especially in the Woodviile district. Moved by Cr. Rathbone, and seconded by Cr. Dillon, that a sum of £50 be voted to the Waipawa riding to be spent in improving the river approach at Waipawa. Carried. Resolved, on the motion of Cr. White, that the road overseer be empowered to obtain another thousand fascines for the Porangahau road at same cost as last. Moved by Cr. Herrick, and carried, that £15 be voted for repairing the road near Grant's homestead, Ruataniwha riding, as recommended by the overseer. Moved by Cr. Gaisford, and carried, that £60 be voted for improvements on No. 2 road, Victoria Settlement, as recommended by the overseer. It was also agreed that the work of extending road opposite Harding's property, Woodviile be carried out. After thorough discussion, it was resolved, on the motion of Cr. Dillon, seconded by Cr. Mackersey, that an estimate be sent to the General Government of the amount which will be required to maintain the bridges and main road, Seventy-mile bush, in repair for the ensuing year, asking that such sum be granted for the purpose. In the event of favorable reply, tenders from parties willing to undertake the maintenance to be called for.

Agreed, on the motion of Cr. Smith, that the chairman see Mr Harding, of Waipukurau, and try to come to some arrangement for a change of crossing at the Tuki Tuki river.

An application, through the Waipawa Road Board, for a subsidy for the work of improvements and repairs to Rosestreet was refused on the ground that Rose-street is not a public road.

The remaining business was unimportant.
