The Wellington College Governors today unanimously appointed Mr Joseph Mackay, M.A., Aberdeen, now and for twelve years resident and mathematical master at the Nelson College, to be principal of the Wellington College. Hearn, of Wellington, has accepted the challenge of A. White, of Mercury Bay, to row a match in Wellington for £100 a side, the course to be not less than three miles straight, and £25 to be allowed White for his expenses if he is beaten.
An inquiry into the recent mishap to the steamer Penguin was commenced this morning. The evidence adduced shows that the accident was due to the chief officer mistaking: Boot Cove for Dreffenbach Point. The enquiry is still proceeding. The Right Rev. Dr Redwood, Bishop of Wellington returned yesterday from his visit to Rome, and met with an enthusiastic reception from his numerous parishioners. On landing from the Bteamer he was heartily congratuated on his safe return. After reaching the cathedral, the Bishop having taken his seat on his throne, Father Yardin, on behalf of the clergy, read an address of welcome. This was followed by_ a number of other addresses, among which was one from the Catholics of Wellington and another from the Hibernian Society. The Bishop was then presented with an illuminated address and a purse of sovereigns. Adresses of welcome were also presented from the Catholics of Blenheim, Nelson, Napier and other places, each being accompanied with a purse of sovereigns. A number of congratulatory telegrams from all partsof the colony were also read. His Lordship, in responding to the kind and enthusiastic reception he received, spoke in general terms of the pleasure it afforded him to receive such protestations of good will and sincere expressions of loyalty to the Church. His Lordship spoke at some length of his visit to Rome, and his reception by Leo XIII. The proceedings were brought to a close by the choir singing the Te Deum.
