The Royal Commission had a long interview with the natives of Opunake on Thursday and Friday, several influential chiefs being present. Sir W. Fox told tbe natives that he would be prepared to mark the boundaries and issue the Crown grants whenever they desired. Several natives expressed a wish that the surveyors should be sent on at once. Wiremu Kingi asked that nothing should be done until the young men in prison were released. The natives were anxious to know what was going to be done with the Parihika block. Sir W. Fox said the Commission could do nothing, as Te Whiti refused to allow his people to come near the Commission when at Oeo last year. The natives are said to have met the Commission in a very friendly manner.
