THE CAB CONTROVERSY.
[To the Editob or the Daily. Telegbafh.] —Thinking an explanation is required in reply to the letter of " ©abbie " in the Hfrald, I beg to state the paragraph in question appeared without my sanction, and that the facts are that, in conversation with Mr Gillies, I arranged to bring the children of the Port school to his ex? hibition if a half-holiday could be obtained, and failing assistance from outMders would defray the expense myself. The conveyance of the school, numbering about 130, was accomplished or paid for by myself, and three out of five owners of single traps resident on the Spit, who took one load each, the other two owners declining, as they were childless, Mr Ryraer, v\ith his ueual generosity, lending me his omnibus. " Cabbie's " grievance being that he got no thanks, which he could hardly expect from children so young, I will assure him that if he will a second time display his generosity special care will be taken to allow him the initiative thus to eecure the coveted publicity. I may say that to Mr Page, whose trap sustained damage to the amount of some 188, my own thanks and that of the parents of children is especially due.—l am, &c, Dani*. Cotton. April 5, 1881.
