HORIZONTAL, FEED, NOISELESS, EASY RUNNING, (Aud without fear of contradiction) THE BEST OF ALL KNOWN QEWING Tl/TAOHINES Thia, the latest claimant for tho the position o " Cheapest and Best in the word " is to he seen at the Warehouse of Mr E. W. Kkowles, HastingH-Bfreet, and unquestionably the many ingenious poiuta displayed in the construction render it well worth examining. Asa matter of fact tho horizontal feed ia corrtmo;i to many machines, and the term has therefore no signification of importance. But in the White machine there is this marked improvement on many other varieties—that the feed plate acts on either sido of the needle. In other words, tho work ia pushed along as if by two fingers instead of one. Obviously this tenda to produce very even results, and it enables tlio operator to sew along the right or left edge of the fabric at pleasure. At tho same time, tho arm of tho machine is at a more than ordinary height above tlio tabic, and the pressure-feel also haa a liberal amount of play given to it by aid of a well-contrived sprinsr. A largo mass o material could therefore be pnsse<i over tho worktable, aud through the machine, without tho remotest chance of njury. The entire mechanism is of the most simple character, and so little friction is there that one may run the machine—almost without being conscious of the fact. When the main part of the machine is not required to be run—as, for Instance, when shuttle bobbins aro to he wound —a littlo spring catch ia thrown back, aud tho sowing mechanism is thereby disconnected from the driving gear. Further, when any given bearing may in tho course of timo become worn, tho mere turning of a screw effects a refitting of tho friction surfaces. One specially ingenious contrivance is displayed in tho tension arrangement of the shuttle. There are no holes to bo threaded, as i 3 commonly tho caao; but the thread being wound in and out of a few jrroovon, a littlo Steel plate pops down, and by the action of a spring which can be made light or heavy at will, keeps' just the desired strain on the under thread. The tension for the upper thread is also automatic. The machines are now ou view, aud an inspection is respectfully solicited, when Price lists, otc, and fuller particulars cm be obtained at E. W. KNOWLES, GfgBBEAi Merchant HASTINGS STREET, NAl'lHlt.
