The old Puritan preachers of Cromwell's time delighted' to spread the gospel by mean s of books and tracts. No sensational pulpiteer of our time could devise more striking titles for bis works than those composed by the Roundhead clergymen. ' Sports that Kill' and ' Old Wells Dug Out 'sound tam 0 when compared with such headings as the following:— ' A Most Sweet, Delectable, and Perfumed ■Nosegay for the Saints to Smell at.' ' A Pair of Bellows to Blow off the Dirt Oast on James Fry.' ' The Snuffers of Divine Love. < Hooks and Eyes for Believers' Breeches.' ■ ' High-heeled Shoes for Dwarfs in HoliH6SS.' ' Crumbs of Comfort for the Chickens of the Covenant.' 'A Sigh of Sorrow for the Sinners of Zion, breathed out of a hole in an earthern vessel, known among men by the name of Samuel Fish.'
