The Emperor of Russia, whose foul murder is announced in to-day's cablegram, succeeded to the throne in 1855, and at the time of his death was 63 years of age. The deceased sovereign was the greatest reformer Russia has ever had, and bis name will be everlastingly honoured as the emancipator of the serfs. In spite of his liberal disposition his life has several times been attempted, and now he has fallen at last a victim to the insesnate folly of a Nihilist. It is such crimes as these that throw back the progress of a nation, and blast the efforts of the sincerest advocates of freedom. The Emperor will be succeeded by the Crown Prince Alexander, who was born in 1845, and married in 1866 the sister of the Princess of Wales.
