WANGANUI RACES.
(by telegraph.) Wangandi, March 11. Beautiful weather favored the opening day of the WaDganui Autumn Meeting. The attendance was somewhat less than last year, not more than 2500 persons being present. The races commenced punctually and continued so all day, every event being over within seven minutes of the advertised time of starting. HURDLE RACE, Of 75 soys., weight for age, 1\ miles. Randwick, 7st 21b (Ruddings) ... 1 Libeller, 7st 51b (Taylor) 2 Natator, Bst 61b (Derrett) 3 —Redeemer, King Quail and Rocket also started.
Natator was a warm favorite. Libeller was the quickest away, followed by Randwick and Natator; then came Libeller and Rocket, all holding back and wanting the pace made for them. Coming to the grand stand at the end of the first mile Redeemer still led, his stable companion Rocket being close up, second; Libeller third; Natator, hugging the rails, fourth; King Quail and Randwick bringing up the rear. At the mile and a quarter King Quail went up third, Mr Quinlivan's pair being etill in command. Rocket soon after fell bick and Natator and Libeller began to close up, Randwick also coming to closer quarters. At the mile and a half the field were all together, the favorite in a good position. Rounding the turn Redeemer fell back to fourth place, and Natator, Libeller, and Randwick, came into the straight neck and neck. All the jocks now began to ride, and the backers of each one of the two had their hopes raised for a time. Randwick with a great effort of speed got the best of it opposite the stand, and maintained it to the end, staving off a determined rush made by Libeller, who was beaten by a head ; Natator, a third of a length away, was third, Redeemer fourth, King Quail fifth, and Rocket sixth. Randwick's fractiousness at the post delayed the start for a time, but finally the flag fell, the horses being then well in line. Randwick and Dan first showed in front, and led past the stand, Soukar just in front of Sir George. As they made the top turn Dan _got his head in front, and with Randwick on bis whip hand, made the pace a .linker. With about two lengths interval came Soukar, Sir George next, the others tailing over and evidently outpaced. At the half-mile post Sir George made up his ground and took third place. He still continued to gain, and when opposite the cattle yards be was within a length of Randwick. Coming to the turn for home Sir George got level with the two leaders, and then the three came into the straight together.
