A SENSATION IN CHINATOWN.
A few days ago a very handsome Chinawoman, who had cost her keeper, -;-m
old hag, some 300 dollars, and who confidently expected to realise by the sale of her a profit of 500 dollars from some wealthy Chinese mei'chant, fell in love with a Mongol in a much lower walk of life, who wanted to marry her, " allee same as Melican girl." After many fruitless attempts at escape, the young Xi Yum fled with her hence to the old City Hall, which is close to Chinatown. There a license was procured, and the civil ceremony was being performed by one of our judges, when Chinatown arose and surrounded the temple of law, invaded the same in numbers, one giant Mongol forcibly taking hold of the girl. Then the clerks stepped to the front, determined to see the marriage through, and issuing the couple through a private way the knot was tied at a remote distance from the scene of warfare, while immediately afterwards the married pair were hurried through more circuitous ways, known only to the officials, and emerging through a small postern, entered a carriage and drove to their home of love and duty. The crowd of Chinese round the City Hall, not knowing of their departure, surged and swore for several hours after, till at last the police dispelled them summarily. Another young beauty in the same unsavory regions was to have been wedded to a great merchant, but well advanced in years. The most sumptous garments had been made for this young beauty, and a feast extraordinary was prepared, when, on entering the bedroom of the bride, she was found dead, having suicided to escape a hateful alliance. So you see the heathen Mongols are fast following in the eteps of the Christian whites.
