VOLUNTEERS FOR THE CAPE.
[To the Editor of the Daily Tkleqeaph.] Siß.—The recent defeat of the British by the Boers ir> the Transvaal has caused an outbreak of the voluteering spirit in these colonies. For what? Is the British Empire in danger ? If Buch was the case there would be very few of these would-be patriots to be found. These volunteers are not needed ; the British have plenty of men, and could sweep the Boers off the face of the earth if they so desired ; by the end of the present month there will be fully 12,000 soldiers in the Transvaal. The public should hesitate before they condemn the Boers; they are simply fighting for their independence, which professedly is so dear to every Englishman, and at least should command the if not the admiration of all colonists. It is ridiculous to see men offering themselves as volunteers to fight for a cause when they are not even aware that it is right or wrong, just or unjust.—l am, & c f A Boer. March 7, 1881.
