Sir Garnet 1 Sylvanus ... 2 —-Hilarious was scratched. Sir Garnet won by a neck, in 2min. 58secs. maiden PLATE. Bouggandown 1 Flying Beauty 2 Herd Laddie 3 The winner started a hot favorite, and won easily. Time, 2min 53sec?. SOUTHLAND CUP, Luna ... ... ... 1 Hilarious 2 Sylvanus 3 -Sir Modred waa scratched. The horses got well away from Mr Howell's starting. Luna cut out the work, closely waited upon by Hilarious, Atlantic third, Sylvanus bringing up the rear. They ran thus for about a mile, when Atlantic fell back, his place being taken by Sylvanus, who was well up with the leaders. As they passed the stand the second time Luna still continued her lead, which ehe maintained until the last turn, when Hilarious made bis effort. It was a clanking race home between the two, the favorite just beating Hilarious on the po9t by a nose, amid cries of " Dead heat! " " Dead heat! " so exceedingly close was the finish. Sylvanus was a fair third. Atlantic, who ran unkindly, was never daugerous. Time, 4mius. 349ecs.
