COMPULSORY SCHOOL ATTENDANCE.
[To the Editor op the Daily Telegraph.] Sir, —This morning's Herald treats at great length on compulsory school attendance. When our district school opened in January, 1879, amongst other encouragements to children attending it, a certificate was to be given for regular attendance. Any child not absent oftener than three half-days a year was to ieceive a first-class certificate, and not absent oftener than five half-days a year a second class certificate. Now, I myself know boys that in that year were not absent one half-day; neither sickness nor weather would keep them at home, trying to gain this certificate, and even for the greater part of 1880, until they saw there was no chance of getting it. Now, 1881, those boys will stop away from school without any excuse at all Might I suggest to Mr Hill the advisability of again offering some encouragement to children for regular attendance. I think he (Mr Hill) would find it far more beneficial than putting a fine on the parents.—l am, &c, A Mother. February 25, 1881.
