There was a clean sheet at the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning.
It is reported that Renata has despatched another armed force to the Tiki Tiki country.
We understand that ah arrangement has been made with the Simonsen Opera Company to appear in Napier from the 14th to the 26th of March.
At the meeting of the Land Beard to-day it was decided to recommend His Excellency to open for sale on deferred payments the following lands :—Sections 14,16, 17, 13,16,18, 20, and 22, Norsewood.
In spite of the dog tax numbers of useless curs are still thought by their owners to be worth ten shillings. Some of these dogs got into Mis Amner's poultry yard the other'night and killed twenty-three fowls. Mr F. W. C. Sturm has brought to our office a case of splendid apples grown at his nursery at West Clive. Mr StU"m informs us that he has no loss than one hundred and thirty-six varieties. We do not remember seeing finer fruit, and with such as the production of our local orchards the importation of the foreign article is more than ever a marvel.
Mr Ormond communicated with the Government yesterday in reference to the departure of the out ward English mail from Napier. In consequence of Mr Ormond's representations the the mail steamer City of New York will be detained at Auckland until the arrival of the Tararua from here. The outward mail with therefore now close at Napier at 9 o'clock to-morrow morning.
There is some likelihood of amateh being made between the old members of the original Bifle Club and an equal number of the present Rifle Association. The names mentioned are, of the eld "shootists":—
Messrs A. Kennedy, R. Williams, J. Close, R. Carter, 8. Dransfield, H. Renouf, S. Hooper, and F. Garner; of the Rifle Association, Messrs Pell, Ross, Pram, Blackwell, Fulford, Garry, Anderson, and Laing.
The imported birds, introduced by the Acclimatisation Society, are becoming the gardenerb' pests in the country districts. Nurserymen find it almost impossible to grow seed, as the linnets —a perfectly useless bird—will have the lot. Pheasants, quail, and the smaller fry, eat and spoil fruit to an alarming extent. Mr Sturm assures us that he loses from fifcy to one hundred apples every day from this cause, and he showed us several which had been completely spoiled by birds. In many gardens the birds have made a clean sweep of theplams.
Madame Wilmot will lecture this evening on " The Enigma of Life" at 8, and hold a class for the investigation of Spiritualism to-morrow evening at the Clarendon Hotel at 8.
A letter of thanks from Mr Wood to those who assisted his son after his recent accident at Taupo is advertised. A meeting of creditors in the estate of J. H. Campbell will be held on March 4th.
Messrs Monteith and Co.'s weekly sale takes place to-morrow, 20 head of horses, at 1.30 p.m. Messrs Miller and Potts will aell at the Criterion Hotel, 60 acres of land at Kaikora, in lots.
