A GOOD HATER.

One of the oldest and most generally respected inhabitants of the Berlin Zoological Gardens, justly renowned for the openness of temper and the decorous calmness of his demeanour, has recently been subjected to mental agitation of an extremely distressing character by the obtrusion upon his honourable privacy of -visits, recalling to him, in all probability, thrilling and painful episodes of his early youth. An Esquimaux family, having been engaged by Dp Bodinus as an additional attraction to the institution •which he so ably manages, has taken up its abode temporarily in the Gardens; and when not occupied in any special Arctic performance, its members are permitted to rove freely within the precincts of the Society's grounds. Not unnaturally, these Boreal wanderers have displayed particular interest in the proceedings; of their distinguished compatriot, (.he Polar bear, and gravitate continually to his den, yearning to look upon his faiuilar lineaments. For lions and tigers they seem not to care one whit. ; to the elephant and rhinoceros they barely vouchsafe a passing glance ; but as the needle to the Pole, so do they, at every un-

occupied moment, turn to the spacious, it' somewhat sloppy, residence of the white bear. These friendly . attentions, however, far from gratifying their object, arouse in him the most deplorably violent passions, prompting him to utter menacing growls and to shake the bars of his cage, whenever an Esquimaux approaches them, with amazing vigour and vehemence. It is interesting to know that these huge animals have such good memories. A dozen years at least must have elapsed since the Berolinian bear had seen one of his hereditary foes in the flesh ; and yet the first Esquimaux who called ivpon him had hardly met his eye when he signified to ) is unwelcome visitor, in the most untn-s----takable manner, that "though absent, he was not forgotten."—Daily Telegraph.
