'This lady is a good platform orator ; her delivery is however, rather too rapid to ensure the best choice of grammitlcal construction of her sentences, but she handles her subjects with boldness, and succeeds in pleasing her audience.

The second competition for the Artillery challenge cup took place this morning at the Tutaekuri range. The morning was bright, but the wind was so strong from the left front that at the 500 yards, range the competitors had to aim fully ten feet off the target. The three highest scorers were : -Lieut. Pell, 64; Gunner Fulford, 63 ; Corporal Blackwell, 60. There were thirteen other competitors, including Sergt. Boss, the late holder of the cup. The prize has to be won twice before becoming the absolute property of any individual.

A correspondent informs us that a strange case of impounding took place at Farndon on Saturday, the 12th instant, when about a dozen horses belonging to Mr F. E. Hamlin and Colonel Whitmore were put into the pound. The horses Were depasturing in a paddock on the Pakowhai road, the gate of which was secured. A labourer living in the neighbourhood, of a very trustworthy character, etates that on his way home on the Friday evening he saw the horses safe in the paddock, and the gate closed, but on returning to his work On Saturday morning the gate was open, and the horses gone. Our correspondent appears to be of opinion that the horses must have been driven out; at any rate, they reached the neighbourhood of the pound at Farndon, and there they were found by a man or men in the employment of the County Council, and at once impounded. On taking them out of the pound the owners were charged 4s per head for damages, in addition to the ordinary pound charges, and on objecting to this charge they were told by the poundkeeper, who is no doubt thoroughly well up in the Impounding Act, that the Queen's highway was an enclosure, being fenced on both sides. At the time this impounding , occurred there were a dozen or* more head of cattle wondering about the township of Clive, and doing actual damage to the County road works. We have before had occasion to suggest that Mr Tracy's men might be better employed in the interests of the County than in levying a kind of black-mail on the settlers in the districts by impounding their horses.
