SPORTING NOTES FROM DUNEDIN.

(btj telegraph.)

Dunedin, February 21.

There was but little work at Forbury yesterday. Chaafe commenced operations by sending Atlantic and Nautilus for a canter once round, Baugbleen Dhoun and Hippona at the same time doing walking exercise. Cutta had hie string out, and sent Sir Modred with the clothing on twice round at a moderate pace. The Adalium colt and Somnus were despatched for a two-mile spin, finishing fast. Hilarious and Sir Garnet, the latter in clothing, had a pipe-opener twice round, and pulled up very fresh. Le Loup cantered half a mile by himself. Sylvanus and Play Boy had a regular duster, the colt having all the best of it. The Cat trotted three miles in grand form. Milo and a three-year old of Dodson's had a sharp spin of two miles; the former appeared to be going rather gingerly, but could still hold his companion cheap. Fishhook, who looks the very picture of health, only cantered, but it is apparent that he retains sufficient of his old form to make it warm for some of the highflyers. Lady Emma and Ledgermain did walking exercise, as also Dodson's lot.

Prince has received a'cablegram stating that Haines has sold Mata for India for 500 guineas.

The Cup candidates are breaking down right and left. Sir Modred continues to harden in price, while the quotations about the others still asked for also shorten cansiderably. Volunteer, who wss under a cloud for a week or two, was in demand on Saturday, but in the evening receded again, and his stable companion Randwick passed him.

In the betting for the Champagne Stakes nothing at present goes down, except Idalium and Amulet, but doubles and trebles are indulged in at prices ranging from 100 to 10 to 1.

Grip and Virginia Water have been scratched for all their engagements. The following are the quotations for the Cup .-—Even against Sir Modred ; 7 to 1 against Le Loup; Bto 1 against Randwick ; Bto 1 against Titauia ; 10 to 1 against Volunteer ; 100 to 8 against Fishhook ; 100 to 6 against Lady Emma; 100 to 6 against, The Governor ; 100 to 5 against Mischief; 100 to 5 against Miss Domett.

Betting on the Champagne Stakes—2 to 1 against Idalium; 3 to 1 against Juliet; sto 1 against the rest.
