THE JEWS IN GERMANY.
[To the Editor of the Daily Teleohuph.] Sir, —With great diffidence I venture to reply to the letter in your paper from my old friend Mr C. Weber, and I would not have done so if he had not sbewn that
his inclination led bim to side with the enemies of the Jews and Professor Treit* schke. I must say, from conversations t have had with Mr Weber, that I am rather surprised such ideas would for a moment find favor with him. I always gave him credit for more liberality. I must, before writing any further, state most emphatically and on undoubted authority that Treitschke is not a German, and it is somewhat laughable to see a man of Slav extraction like him inveighing against the Jews for their origin. Now, I deny most positively that there i 9 any combination of any kind among the Jews for trade purposes ; on the contrary, they are wise enough to buy iv the cheapest market, and if a Christian draper or any other trader sella cheaper than his Jewish neigh* bor they are not likely to spend money in the dearest shop df the two, common sense is against it. But there is a widespread and universal combination amongst the Jews all over the world and acknowledged by everybody, and that is for the 6acred cause of Charity; it does not matter to the Jew for what sect it ie needed, they are always foremost in giving for this noble purpose. Mr Weber's remarks about the Rothschild family scarcely needs a reply; the fame of this house is so widepread for their honesty and charities that I might let this drop. But does Mr Weber doubt for a moment that Baron Lionel de Rothschild was an Englishman to the backbone; or, to descend very much lower, does he doubt for a moment that I am one ? As a humble member of the Jewish persuasion I can pjsitively assert I know of no other country. My father was the first Jew in England elected to a municipal office, and allowed to serve without taking the oath on the true faith of a Christian. As a Jew lam as loyal to Her Majesty the Queen as any other Briton of whatever religion he may profess, and why should not the German Jews have the same feeling of loyalty to their Emperor ? Touching the war with France, I am sorry to contradict Mr Weber, but I know there were thousands of Jews in the German army, and if any one will take the trouble to call on me I can show them a photograph that will prove beyond doubt what a large number of Jews were in the army. They were allowed by their generals to assemble and hold service on the field of battle on their greatest festival, and this service is perpetuated by the photograph. There is one thing, in my mind, which is the cause of all the trouble; it is well known that there are a great number of Jews members ot Parliament in Germany, and they are, I beliere, with one exception, Liberals, and oppoeed to Bismarck. Now, Bismarck does not care to do the dirty work himself, but I have very little doubt he is the wirepuller who sets such men as Treitschke and Stocker in motion to get up this Judenhatze. I fear my letter has already grown too large for your columns, but I could write a great deal more, and with your permission will do so in a future issue. Your insertion of the above will oblige.—l am, &c, David Levi. Napier, February 20, 1881.
