An English officer gives an incident that occurred in tho Crimea which illustrates the impulsive ardour of the Irishman. While lying wounded at Alma, a man stepped over me and said, "Will you bo so kind as to tell me, sir, if you are alive ; or, if you are not, perhape this dhiop of dhrink will help you ?" x A colored preacher remarked :—" When God made do fust man, he sot him a<nn do fence to dry." "Who made de fence?" interrupted an eager listener. " Put. Dat man out!" exclaimed the colored preaeber; "such questions as dat 'el destroy all the theoloev in the world !" M Alady with a fatal squint went once to a fashionable artist for her portrait. He looked at her and she looked at him, and both were embarrassed. He spoke first. " Would your ladyship permit me," ho said, "to take the profile ? There is a certain shyness about your ladyship's eyes which is difficult in art as ib ia fascinating in nature."
