DUNEDIN. February 12. A fire in the shop of Woods, tailor, Port Chalmers, was extinguished fbefore much damage was done. Wood alleges that be losses £45 in money. Mr Watt, R.M., made an explanation from the bench to-day re flogging and sentencing boys for apple-stealing, which had been severely commented on by the press. His Worship said the real punishment was the flogging, and it was necessary to award imprisonment in order to have the boys flogged in the gaol. A committal to the Industrial School was no punishment at all, as on good behaviour the boys were immediately let out to their parents. By this means he could to a great entent prevent larrikinism in Dunedin more easily than he could if it was allowed to get ahead. The sentence was only apparently severe, but practically one that would be preventative.
