THE AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS AT NELSON.

Play was resumed at 11 o'clock yesterday morning. The weather was glorious. The Australians went in for their first innings, Qroube and Spofforth batting to the bowling of Fowler and Burns. Groube took the first over from Fowler, which was a maiden. In Burns' first over Spofforth got a single off, and Fowler's next Spofforth tipped for 1 and Groube hit out for 3. The following over was a maiden. Spofforth and Groube each hit for 1, and then a maiden was bowled at each end. In the eighth over
Spofforth was run out. I—3—7. Murdoch filled the vacancy. After a maiden Murdoch hit a ball magnificently out of the ground for four, and 10 went up. In the next over, through loose fielding, Murdoch made two. In the following over Groube added a single, and then a maiden followed. In the fourteenth over Murdoch was clean bowled by Burns. 2—6 — 14. M'Donnell joined Groube, and having added to the score 1 and 2, and Groube a single, 20 appead on the board. After a single each, Burns got M'Donnell. 1-5—22. Slight went in and after a maiden made a good hit for 2, and af'.er Groube had added one, he repeated the dose, but in the sixteenth over Groube hit the wicket off Burns. 4—12—29. Jarvia followed and commenced with a hit beyond the flags for 3, adding 2in thenext over. Two maidens intervened. Then Slight added a single, and in the next over put the ball into Balmain's hands, but it was not held. However, he was bowled after a maiden over by Fowler. 5—4—35. Boyle replaced Slight and five maidens followed, the bowling being splendid. In the 34th over Jarvis was run out by smart fielding. 6 — 5-35. Palmer followed. Boyle slipped for 2 and followed with a single. Two maidens Ricceeded. Boyle then gave a chance to Sims, who ran in well, but the ground was rough, and be stumbled. Boyle immediately after drove the ball for 3, following with another 3in the next over. In the next two overs 5 was obtained. Then one each, and after a maiden Palmer slipped 3, and 50 went up. Boyle having scored one, gave Lawry a chance a mid-off, which was not refused. 7 —14—52. Alexander was the next man. Palmer then added 3 through loose fielding. Two maideDS followed, and Palmer having added a 3, Alexander 2, Palmer two ones and a 3, Alexander was caught by Firth off Burns. B—2-65. Blackham took the vacancy, and having a bad foot, Boyle ran for him. After two maidens Burns gave a wide. Blackham then drove for 3, and 70 went up, but after Palmer had added one Blackham was caught by Balmain off Fowler. 9 — 3—72. White was the last man, but his stumps were scattered by the first ball, the innings which occupied a little over two hours, closing for 72, and leaving the Nelson team eleven runs to the good on the first innings. Nelson at once commenced their second innings, and it closed soon after 4 o'clock for 77 runs. It being a two days match the game is considered a draw, and is the first game in New Zealand that the eleven have not won.
The eleven play in Wanganui to-day and to-morrow, and leave on Monday evening for Napier.
