The Board of Trade returns of imports for the past month amount to £26,750,000, showing a decrease of £5,625,000, and the exports amount to £17,312,500, showing an increase of £375,000 also compared with the month of January, 1880.
A disastrous fire has broken out in a colliery at Tunstal, Staffordshire. Twenty colliers are entombed, and but little hopes of rescuing them is entertained.
Mr T. W. Walsh, a Land Leaguer, and one of the traversers in the recent prosecution at Dublin, has started for Australia.
In the House of Commons to-day the debate on the Irish Coercion Bill was reeumed. The proceedings were in every respect orderly, and the debate is progressing satisfactorily. Consols have declined to 98|. New Zealand securities are unchanged. Adelaide wheat has fallen one shilling per quarter, and is now quoted at 43 9d, ex-warehouse; flour, ex-warehouse, remains at 345, and New Zealand wheat, ex-ship, at 445. Australian tallow remains at 34s 6d for best beef, and 39s for best mutton. It is announced that it is the intention of the Government that the Irish Land Bill should if possible become law before Easter, and every effort will be made to bring about this result. February 8. In view of possible hostilities with the Ashantees, Her Majesty's corvette Champion has been ordered to the Gold Coast, where she will organise a naval brigade for service in Ashantee.
