London, December 81. The trial of Mr Parnell and the other chiefs of tbe Land League commened at Dublin on the 27th instant. The jury, composed of eight Catholics, three Protestants, and one Quaker, were empannelled after much dispute between the Crown lawyers and the counsel for the defence.

Tbe Government seem to be apprehensive of an armed rising, judging from the increased military precautions. Tbe force in Dublin now consists of 200 officers and 6.000 men, 1,000 cavalry, and 18 guns, independent of Constabulary. Fresh troops are going from England. A flying column has been formed to scour tbe country in all directions to prevent a Fenian rising. The League increasfs daily, an d Boycotting is becoming a regular system, being applied to all individuals obnoxious of the League. Not only farmers but tradesmen are compelled to subscribe to its funds.

The French Government are gradually effecting a complete separation between Church and state. The prosperity of France at present is extrordiuary, and it is still increasing.
