Wellington, February 7

The match between tbe Australian eleven and a Wellington twenty-two was commenced at ooou on Saturday. The weather was fine. There was a fair wicket, but the fielding ground was very lumpy. There were about 1000 persons present. Wellington won the toss and elected to go 1 to the wickets. The twenty-two were all out at 4 o'clock for 82 runs.

Wellington took the field after a short interval, Groube and Spofforth batting to the bowling of Armitage and Francis. Spofforth drove Francis for a single and cut Armitage for 3. When seven were reached Groube put au easy one to Salmon, which was accepted. 7—l—2. Murdoch filled tbe gap, but after receiving a couple of balls was smartly taken in slips by Marchant oft Francis. 6 — 2-0. M'Donnell joined Spofforth, but was run out in attempting to steal a bye. 13-3-0. Slight followed, and a good stand was made. The bowling was changed again and again, but without the desired effect, the batsmen acting on the defensive. The field was now treated

to a great deal of leather hunting. When time was called, Spofforth and • Slight were still at the wickets, the score

standing at G4. When the score stood at 60, Spofforth was let off by long-stop. The fielding of Wellington was very good. Australians' first~innings. Groube, cW. Jarvis followed, and the score at 1.30 stood—Spofforth, 32 : Slight, not out, 39; Jarvis, not out, 11 ; total four wickets for 98.
