January 28. Another patient has escaped from the lunatic asylum. The cost of the Cathedral spire is to be defrayed by the son and daughters of the late Mr G. Rhodes, of Timaru, not Mr W. Rhode?, as previously reported. The Board of Reviewers under the Property Assessment Act heard the objection by the Building Societies yesterday. After counsel for the objectors had argued at considerable length, the Board decided that Building Societiy shares must be treated the same as shares in any public company. The weather is very favorable for the harvest, and the crops are being rapidly harvested in splendid condition. interest is manifested in tbe cricket match with the Australians. The general opinion is that the Canterbury team is not strong enough to win. A disastrous fire occurred at Kaiapoi at 2 o'clock this morning, by which five buildings were dastroyed. Full particulars are not yet to band. The Australian cricketers arrived from Timaru by the 1.55 train, and will practice this afternoon. The ciicket ground is in magnificent order.
