Ona morning contemporary in to-day's issue made a most uncalled-for attack upon our District Railway Manager in reference to the engagement of a special train for the conveyance of buyers at the Hastings ram fair. The facts of the case are these :—Mr Luckie, who is in the employment of Messrs. Hoadley and Lyon, wrote a note to Mr W. J. Miller, stating that a special train would be required, and giving the names of the auctioneers as a guarantee. Mr Miller wrote a memo, at the back of the note saying that a train would be put on on payment of £9, and forwarded it to Mr Luckie. At about 4 p.m. Mr Hoadley called upon Mr Miller at the station and demanded a special train almost as a matter of right. Mr Miller said "give me your i.o.u. or cheque, and you shall have the train," the regulations being that these trains will be run by the Railway Department at special request, and on payment of a deposit as a guarantee, returnable if the takings exceed the amount equivalent to the charge for ninety second-class single tickets. Mr Hoadley replied that he would not do so, and that Mr Miller could get the money from Mr M. R. Miller. Mr Luckie then appeared on the ecence, and Mr Miller said to him, •' I will take your i.o.u. or a cheque." Mr Luckie refused to give either, Messrs Luckie and Hoadley then went away, and advertised a special train. Mr Miller seeing the advertisement in the morning paper, posted up the notice complained of. At 2.30 in the afternoon Mr M. R. Miller's clerk called at the railway station, and engaged the train, paying the required deposit.
