THE AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS AT TIMARU.

Timahu, January 27. The match between the Australian eleven and twenty- two of South Canterbury was commenced yesterday. The weather was magnificent. Play commenced at 12.45. The Australian captain, having won the toes, sent his men in, Spofforth and Groube fasing the bowling of Asbby and Rotbwell. Runs came slowly, and some half dozen overs were maidens. Groube gave a good chance to Verity at long off, but it was not taken. Then Groube drove Ashby and tried a second run, but Spofforth declining to go Groube could not
get back in time, and the first wicket fell. I—ll—l9. Murdoch filled the vacancy. Aften seven more runs had been obtained Spofforth put one up to long field. 2—11—26. M'Donnell followed, but wa3 very soon clean bowled by Ashby. 3—1—30. Slight took his place, and, after a maiden, Ashby scattered bis stumps. 4—0—30. Jarvia was the incomer. Runs now came more freely, and when the adjournment for lunch was called the score stood at 56. Play was resuaed at three o'clock, and the figures went trotting up until Jarvie put an easy one into Fraser's hand at cover point. 5-28—74. Boyle took the vacant place. A century was scored, and shortly after Murdoch put a ball up, and it was secured by Hughes, the captain retiring amid much applause. 6—32—105. Blackham took his place, and the scoring kept on well until he let out at a straight one from "Rothwell and missed it. 7—6 —141. Palmer came next, and when 17 more bad been added to the score Boyle was bowled. 4—48 — 152. Alexander filled the vacancy. Runs came pretty fast, and the 200 was passed when Alexander skied a ball over the bowler's head, and it fell into Verity's hands. 9—22—206. White was the last man in. He had only scored one run when, stepping put to meet a ball, he only just touched it, and it was caught by Fowler at the bails. 10-I—2lß , Palmer was not out with 39. At 5.50 the Australians took the field, Godby and Jones batting to the bowling of Spofforth and Palmer. Godby played his third ball on to bis wicket and retired without scoring. Demden took bis place, and almost immediately a ball from Spofforth took Jones' middle stump. Jefferson came next and Spofforth gave him an easy one to start with. Jefferson tapped it softly into Boyle's hands at mid-on. Ashby followed and put his first ball lightly into White's hands at short-leg, Spofforth thus taking three successive balls. Raymond took the vacant place and shortly after time was called. Australians—Firat Innings.
