ARTILLERY VOLUNTEERS.
SHOOTING FOE THE CHALLENGE CUP. The first competition for the challenge cup, won by the above company at the late Hawke's Bay Rifle Association, took place this morning. The firing commenced shortly after 5.30, when it was perfectly calm and bright, and some really excellent scores were made in consequence, the first ten men averaging over centres. Captain Garner, assisted by Staff Sergeant Nelson, conducted the firing. The conditions, ranges, &c., were as follows:—Five shots at 200, 300, 400; and 500 yards; no sighters ; carbines allowed two points; Wimbledon targets, 1870. Sergeant J. Ross is the lucky winner for the first time, which we may say is a very popular win, as he is an entirely Hawke's Bay shot. Below •we give the first ten scores. The wind at 400 and 500 yards was very troublesome to some of the shooters who came last on the list. 200 300 400 500 yds yds ycte yds Tl. Sergeant J.
