APPOINTMENT OF BOROUGH ENGINEER.
[To the Ediior of the Daily Telegbaph.] Sir,—At the meeting of the Borough Council held last Friday evening, Councillor De Lisle is reported to have said that, out of the twenty-six applications sent in for the appointment of Borough Engineer, only one, Mr Saunders, was a certificated engineer. This I beg to give an unqualified denial, as I have served an apprenticeship of three years with a firm of mechanical engineers, and three years with an eminent civil engineer. I should have thought, after the immense amount of wind and eloquence which was wasted at the different Council meetings, that Councillor De Lisle woeld have been better acquainted with the pros and cons of each applicant than is evidently the case. Such an assertion being calculated to do me a professional iniury has placed me in the unpleasant position of defending myself.—l am, &c, James Atherton, C.E., M.E. January 17, 1881.
