THE AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS AT DUNEDIN.

[by telegrath.]

DufrEniN, January 22

The weather yesterday was again very j fine, but at the commencement of play a strong breeze from tbe north-west was blowing strongly. A terrible gale which was raging during tbe early part of the morning, and which reduced the grand stand to a perfect wreck, had, however, subsided, and the sun shone brightly. Parker and S. Leith, who commenced the first innings of Otago the previous evening, and played a couple of overs just before time was called, went to the wickets at 12.35. Spofforth started bowling from tbe east, with Palmer at the west end, the rest of the Australian team being disposed of as follows: — Wickets, Blackham ; point, Spofforth and Alexander; cover-point, Palmer and Alexander; long-stop, M'Donnell; short-slip, Slight; long-on, Groube; mid-o'', Boyle ; equare-leg, Jarvis ; longleg, White; short-leg, Murdoch. The Otago twenty-two held the wicket until close upon 4 o'clock, scarcely three hours and a half. At one portion of the innings Palmer took six wickets in less than twenty minutes. The iunings closed for 83, or 29 behind the total of the Australians. DUNEDIN—FIBBT INNINGS. S. Jarvis and Spofforth went in to commence the Australians' second innings. M'Neill opened the bowling, delivering a maiden. Moore and Carr both declined to bowl against the wiud, and M'Neill was cheered on going to the opposite end. Cooke bowled with the wind. In his second over Jarvis was caught by Paramour. 6 —l—6. Murdoch joined Spofforth, who got three owing to Moore's wretched fielding. Singles came apace, until Spofforth drove both bowlers for three and lifted M'Neill for two. He then lifted the same bowler amongst the crowd junt beyond tbe boundary flag, but tbe umpire being iv doubt only called three tor it. Paramour relieved M' Neill, and Murdoch got bis first away for three a couple to Murdoch off the same bowler brought | 30 up. Clark, who fielded much better than on the previous day, caught Spofforth in long field. 31—2—24. M'Donnell filled bis place. Singles followed, until M'Donnell drove Paramour for three, producing 41, M'Neill again relieved Paramour, and M'Donnell was well cheered on lifting him over the boundary line for four. Another change in bowling was tried, Moore going on at Hume's end. Murdoch was given out lbw by the Australian umpire. 51—3— 15. Slight came in to see M'Donnell dismissed with a bailer from M'Neill. 51 —4 — ]2. Otago's hopes were raised greatly at getting rid of the best batsman so cheaply. Groube came next. Both batsmen got singles off each end, but the fielding was so good that runs came slowly. Groube played one out of reach of the field, and followed this up with a brace of singles. Slight then varied the monotony by lifting M'Neill over the boundary fence for four. Slight whs given out in attempting a short run, the ball being smartly returned by Harris. 65 —5—8. The retiring batsman protested against the decision, and the prevailing opinion was that it was a case of touch and go. At 5 minutes to six o'clock Boyle went in and Haskell went on in Hume's place, but time did not permit of any result. Australian eleven —2nd innings.
