January 19

The Bruce Herald states that the directors of the Bank of New Zealand have presented the widow of; Mr Alfred Jones, late manager at Nelson, with a cheque for £1000. ' ' ' The Presbyterian Synod have agreed that, as the Deceased Wife's Sister Bill has not yet received the Royal assent, it Would merely record its regret at the passing of the Act, but did not deem it necessary to take further action ; and, by 26 to 13, carried a resolution appointing a committee to consider the whole subject of the union with the Northern Church, and to confer, with any committee appointed by tbe latter. The principal opponents were D. Stuart and tbe Rev. Mr Hills. The Rev. Mr Royley has been nominated Moderator for tbe ensuing year

A large meeting was held in the Good Templar's Hall last night, convened by the Bible in Schools Association, to consider the question of the introduction of the Bible in the : State schools. Mr John Bathgate moved, " That in the opinion of this meeting a portion of the Bible should be read daily,in tbe public schools of the colony, subject to a time table and conscience' clause." Mr' George Bell proand the Rev. J. U. Davis seconded* ".■That this meeting, impressed,. by the advantages offered by our present system of national education, deprecates any interference with its provisions which would tend in the direction of denominationalism." The , Rev. ,Mr Copeland moved as an amendment, "That this meeting, while deprecating any legislation that tends to denominationalism, is yet of opinion that a portion of theßibleshould be read daily with a time-table and conscience clause." After considerable confusion, Mr Bell's amendment was carried by nearly three to one. The Bible Association are going to consider another nieeting.
