LONDON

January 17

It has been arranged that the sculling match between Hanlan and Laycock shall (the state of the river permitting) take pltce on Saturday afternooD, the 22nd instant.

In tbe House of Commons to-day tbe debate on the Address in Reply to tbe Queen's speech was resumed. Mr Justin McCarthy, the Home Rule member for County Lorgford, Ireland, moved, as an amendment, that the Government should refrain from using :the military to enforce the ejectment of tenants until the Land Bill was passed, and made a lengthy speech in support of bis motiou. The Right Hon. W. E. Gladstone, in reply, said that he deemed the proposed amendment as an insult to the Throne, and as an attempt to obstruct tbe action of the Government. He hinted that strong measures would be taken to prevent any such obstruction. Mr Parnell spoke on tbe motion, and in the course of his speech admitted that the ultimate object of the Land League was to secure autonomy for Ireland. He deprecated the commission by the Leaguers of any act likely to lead to a revolution, but added that the first arrest under a measure of coercion would be tbe signal for the complete repudiation of rents by the Irish tenants. The debate lasted during the whole sitting, and was further adjourned till tomorrow.
