January 11
News has been received that further hostilities have occurred between the Cape forces and the rebel Bassutos. The latter, in considerable numbers, made an attack on Colonel Carrington's position at Mafeting, but were repulsed after heavy fighting. The enemy suffered considerable loss.
January 12
Communication, though of an intermittent character, has again been established between Natal and the Transvaal. News has been received regarding the position of the British troops at Potschifstroom. Tbe Boers have laid siege to the place, but the garrison can hold out for a month, having sufficient supplies for that period, and it is hoped that by that time for the relief of the beseiged.
