The Geographical Society of Berlin has resolved to discover the starting-point of the gales and hurricanes which spring up sometimes quite suddenly, and sweep across the ocean. With this object, it _ intends to establish scientific observatories in the Arctic regions, to study theair-currents,and to deduce from the information there gained the fundamental laws of meteorology. It is calculated that in the course of six years, no fewer than 1005 ships (with a register of 225,500 tons) and 2204 sailors have perished; and it is believed that shipping disasters would bo to a great extent lessened by a knowledge of the laws whioh regulate the winds.
