January 6. The trial of Gibson, the murderer of Kerrieone, is fixed for Monday next.
Beautiful weather is prevailing for the harvest, which promises to be very satisfactory. A deputation, including the Mayor of Greymouth, waited on the Premier this morning with reference to the construction of a railway to the West Coast, and explained that they proposed to undertake the work provided the Government would make a grant of land on the line of railway. The Premier promised to lay the matter before the Government at the earliest opportunity.
A new weekly society journal, to be called Liberty, is announced to appear on Saturday next.
Several tradesmen have offered trophies in connection with the cricket match, Australian eleven versus Canterbury.
A suspicious fire occurred at Papanui last night, an unfinished house being destroyed. The insurance is £400 in the National office. An enquiry is to be held.
