ORIGINAL POETRY.
THE PltOrilECT OF TUB STARS. The Heavens showed a glimmering lie;ht r Fainter than Luna's beams at night, — A single star shot forth : Britain beheld th' toKen given From tli' exalted realms of Heaven And told it to the earth ! The Star was an em'rald Continent Un which eternally had spent The beams of Summer's Sun — Quick — from the soil of Freedom part The noble Briton's soul and heart — • A second World's begun ! 1 Those forests where perpetual gloom Had reign'd as silent as the lomb In undisturbed repose — Now echo with the notes of love. And Godhead smiling from above Around his bounty throws ! "Thou Star, within whose comely sphere A constant summer's blooms appear — Thy Zone so pure and bright Enshrouds within its maize I deem — (Like some young soul's untroubled dream) A glorioua satellie!!" No sooner bad the Maker's words Vibra'ed on th' Angelic chords Than from each Bacon's mouth A burst of joy and wild applause Proclaimed it then by Christian Laws The Sceptre of the South ! ! Centaur.
