DOMESTIC INTELLIGENCE.
Mechanics' Institute. — A Lecture on Music will be delivered to the Mdtnbers of this Institute, on Thursday first, at 8 o'clock, p. m., by Thomas Outliwaite, E.-q. Jinglic's Report. — Government brig returned from Cook's Str.iitB — awful news — horrid in>.s«acre — all through one madman — The Great Man's fault — should have turned him off long ago — people petitioned him — obstinate — would'nt do it — see what it's come to — dreadful catastrophe — very. Port Nikian's frightened — poor creatures — Militia corps out —funny work — eyes front — don'c fire off your ramrod sirdangerous very — chalked foot foremost — and all that. Half of the lobsters going down in the " Brig" — drill 'em up smart — no mistake — Quixotic affair — don't like it much — too many windmills there — hope they won't get hurt — good fellows — very. Great curiosity at the " Royal" — >ne of the New Zealand Company's big brass guns — just arrived — to be seen daily — heavy metal — extensive calibre — very — Sent up loaded too — primed — ready to go off — charged with vengeance patent grape shot — benefit of the Maories — of course — emitting continuous volleys of the same since arrival — no perceptible effect — plenty noises-clouds of smoke J — clouds 1 ! — clouds ! ! I •^ Total Abstinence Fociety. —We understand the members and friends of this Society held a meeting on Tuesday week, at which a report was read by the chairman on the progress of temperance. la this report he took occasion to mention that we had neither countenanced, nor discountenanced their efforts. In this we think he is wrong. We may not have spoken of teetotalism by that name, but we are at all times quite as anxious as the worthy chairman, to see that
our small community is both temperate and moral ; and while wi must not gainsay ihe wisdom >>f the Apostle in recommending a little wine to the infirm ; we aie still of opinion llvit cold water is a beverage, and that the man who abstains from cltink does well. We know of .no cure for the drunkard but total abs'inence, but we would not have any man cherish piide because he is nor a beast. Bay of I.slaxds. — We understand by private letters from the Bay, that all tho whaling stations have hitherto been exceedingly fortunate. Mr. Mavhew's vessel, ihe / Dont Know, has arrived at tho Bay witli a full cargo of oil, and another cargo was waiting her return at tho whaling station. Mr. Mayhcw is deserving of succors : ho lias done much for the Bay of Islands, and New Zealand generally, lie and his countrymen are deserving of every support and countenance ; if our government were wi.se, they would givo Americans all the privileges of British subjects.
