OURSELVES AND THE PUBLIC

It is customary at the end of a Term, or Quarter, to say something by way of recommendation to Subscribers and praise of one's own labour, industry and 11 good intentions. Wo forbear asking, or taking to ourselves any praise or merit for past labours ; and wo decline, and dislike the giving of pledges. If wo arc deserving of support, we expect the people will have sense enough to perceive that it is their own interest to give it, by making a cheerful and ready payment of] our accounts against them, and subscribing as numerously as possible. This must be the oil by which tho Southern Cross shall manufacture its gas and light. It will not burn without it; it would not bo ju.st to ex-pect it. Jf, on the other hand, wo arc not deserving of support, if wo arc not working for the common good, we arc sorry for it. Wo wish to be useful. We have never refused to make known tho wants or wishes of any portion of the community. Our pages arc ever open. If others have more correct views of any important subjects, we are always anxious to givo them the preference over our own. We shall not say more on this subject. We have made an experiment for the good of the public, on which we are willing to endure a certain amount of loss. If wo arc likely to suffer much, we desist. The conduct of our friends and subscribers on the trying occasion of the commencement of a New Quarter, will havo a decided effect upon the future course and progress of the Sodtiiern Cross.
