June 29th, 1843. 4 To the Editor of the Southern Cross. SIR, — I have made it a rule in general, to avoid Newspaper controversy in private matters, believing that it is better to put up with impertinence, rather than seek undesirable notoriety. This feeling, however, may be carried too far. I request the favor of you to permit me, through your columns, to answer ait Advertisement that appeared last week, signed " W. Jjjm.ithson," calling upon me to return some spoons. I have only to males the following simple statement : — It is quite true that I borrowed from Mr. Smithson some metal gpnons, said to be, 16 in numbef. Some few day 8 afterwards, I waR honored by a visit from Mrs. Smithson and some female friend ; they were exceedingly gracious, drank three glasses of port wine each, for which of course, I had too much gallantry to charge after the loan of the spoons. On leaving, Mrs. Smithson Requested' me to get the spoons brightened up and sent home, which I did, and as I thought, the whole of them ; but it turned out, I only 6cnt twelve, the other four having been left behind in mistake. You may then imagine my surprise at the Advertisement, the more especially as I am not at all aware of having given either Mr. or Mrs. Smitbson any cause of offence, or, of supposing they owed me any ill-will ; added to which, the spoons in question are not worth the amount that must have been paid for the stupid advertisement. Yours, Sic, W. HART. July 13th, 1813. —
