New Zealand Tournament Opens Dominion Special Service. CHRISTCHURCH, August 22. The New Zealand women’s basketball tournament was opened olUeially by the acting-mayoress. Mrs. M. E. Lyons, who witnessed a march past of the 20 teams competing. The first games resulted as follows:— Otago 10, Wanganui 15; Canterbury 30, Hawke’s Bay 13; Southland 11, Wellington 11: Hutt Valley IS, Ashburton 14; Taranaki 19. South Canterbury 8: Mamiwntu 22. Rotorua 11: Wairoa 10, Buller 12; Poverty Bay 13, -Matamata 13; Taurauga 15. Hokitika -1. The lirst half of the Wellington-South-land game lacked interest, the referee continually blowing his whistle. At halftime, witli little outstanding play. Southland led .1-3. The score was evened after two minutes’ play with goals by Dentlee amt Coailstnan. Wellington failed to hold Southland, but with the score at 7-5. Dentie,. goaled. At this stage, with five minutes to go, play sparkled, anil Wellington equalled at 8-8. Then each side scored from its own throw. From a free pass Deritice scored mid Wellington led 9-8. The score mounted to 11-11. ami before time was culled each side missed opportunities. the game ending with Wellington oil Hie attack. Mr. A’Court refereed. At a meeting of the council of the New Zealand Basketball Association, the New Zealand tournament was allocated to Tailr.'tng.'t for 1916. ami to Taranaki for 1918. At a council meeting nf the New Zealand Referees' Association, delegates from 17 associations were present. The following otlieers were elected: President, Miss foster: vice-presidents. Mrs. MeInnes, Miss Armstrong. Mrs. Caveney, Miss Crumpton: secretary. Miss Fergusson. Miss Armstrong was appointed a life member.
