Provision Of Nautical Training
•'The Government is keenly interested in the provision of the fullest facilities for training New Zealand boys for the seafaring profession.” said the Minister of .Marine, Mr. O'BRIEN, in a written reply to a question by .Mr. Carr (L„ Timaru). / . , , , "The school of navigation at Auckland, previously operated b.v Captain W. J. Keane, was taken over and has been carried on for some little time by the Marine Department, and the number of students offering has already necessitated the appointment of an additional tutor, lidded the Minister. In connexion with this school, consideration is being given for extension to correspondence courses, evening classes, and pre-vocational training ns opportunity offers. "The curriculum of the school is designed mainly for seamen who desire to pass into officered rank or low-grade officers who desire to improve their status. 'ln regard to younger lads who are desirous of going to sea, consider:!lion is being given to the provision of a certain amount of nautical training in technical colleges and provision of land camps for pre-vocational training and also some means of training these lads on actual seafaring experience. In. this connexion twelve lads are continuously employed as apprentices on the barque Pamir.”
