Soldier Who Lived Beside Camp
A corporal and two privates, pleaded guilty before a district court martial at Treotliam to an unusual charge—assisting a soldier they knew to be absent without leave to conceal himself. They were sentenced to a period of detention. .
The facts were that a soldier went absent without leave on September 28, .1944. He returned to camp on April 1, apparently with the intention of giving himself up. He did not do so, but camped in an unused public works but just outside the earn]). He got his meals in the camp and frequented the usual entertainments at night. The accused were not aware for a time he was absent without leave, and when they did find out, did not wisli to be parties to reporting him. Eventually he was arrested on July 13. 1945, and dealt with by court martial.
