The grass tracks are bolding a tot of wati;" and the going for ihe opening day of the Wellington winter meeting on Saturday is certain to be very heavy. . Horses whlt'li impressed in their work were Foxsen, Whackie and Regal Night. The only horse to Jump was M.vriet, who cleared four hurdles on the inside course in good style. Chat was lame after doing pace work. She has not been sound since .she arrived at Trentham from Auckland, .'inti the heavy state of the tracks imposes u. searching test on horses not thoroughly sound. Leuardo was another to move scratetuly till lie warmed up. This horse has been victim to a muscular complaint for some time and it has prevented him from coinpiling a good record as he is a capable galloper. Arrivals from the north include Inters Choice and Black Plato from Ilawera. and Greenfeast and Alienate from Hastings. All were working yesterday and are m good shape, the condition of Peter s Choice and Alienate attracting attention. leters Choice does not run till the second day, when his mission will be the Parliamentary Handicap, in which he will be ridden by A. Midwood. Alienate is engaged in the Vittoria Hurdles on Saturday,. and will be ridden bv D. M. Ryan. Oreonfeast is well forward. He was a winner in sott going at Trentliam in the spring anil lie did not experience any trouble in handling the heavy going yesterday w-brin working a round at a good pace with Alienate on the trial grass which was I very sloppy. In Nice Order. Moutoa Bond was troubled a fortnight ago with a slight, eoid, but she has picked lip quickly and she is carrying plenty of bloom at present. This mare has run some of her best races over the mile course at, Trentliiiin, and invariably does best, on her home course, ns she has never been a good traveller. Also she is quite at home in winter going.
Run a Sound Race. A Timaru writer states that. Aniorlau ran a sound race at (lie ■South Canterbury meeting when reappearing after a spell. This -gelding has been a disappointment since his sale a year ago to Mr. D. Macfarlanc, but lie is reported to be in good order for bis Trentham engagements. He will run in (lie M byte Handicap on Saturday. A Likely Hurdler.
Though his schooling has ‘been nothing hotter than average since lie reached Trentham. Invincible Is a likely type of horse to do well in tills department. After running in the hurdle race on the second day of the Dunedin June meeting, be finished second in the open sprint on the last day.
