FIERCE COUNTER-ATTACK BY GERMANS
Tank Battle West Of Caen FURTHER AMERICAN PROGRESS ON CHERBOURG PENINSULA LONDON, July 5. The Canadians west of Caen were still holding firmly to the village of Carpiquet this morning, and a correspondent says that our troops were still in the hangars and buildings at the northern end of the Carpiquet airfield. The Germans, alarmed by General Dempsey s advance, last night counter-attacked with great determination using a force of from 30 to 40 tanks. A great tank battle was fought on the airfield which is a mile wide. As a result of this encounter most of the Canadian forward troops were slightly withdrawn. The American advance from the west side of the Cherbourg Peninsula has made further progress, arid a correspondent reports that the Allies are only a mile from La Haye du Puits and are closing on the village from the west, north and south-east..
