After taking a degree in New Zealand. Colonel Dawson went tn Engl.'iml and joined tile territorial army. He was a captain when the war began, and :i lieutenant-colonel al the age nt 29. and was in charge of a Held at the siege of Tobruk. He. also served in Cyprus.
