Washington, Rome And Berlin (Received July 5. 7 p.m.) NEW YORK, July 4. In one of the most grimly satisfying Fourth of July ceremonies in the history of the United States armed forces, says the Associated Dress correspondent in Rome, the same American Hag which flew over the Capitol in Washington on the fateful days when the Axis attacked the United States rose to the masthead of Roire's Piazza Venezia, while Mussolini's balcony was empty and silent in the morning sunlight. Major-General Harry Johnson, commander in the Rome area, said: “'This same flag will subsequently fly over Berlin.” The ceremony was attended by the Secretary of War, 'Mr. Stimson, who arrived in Rome a few minutes beforehand and inspected a guard provided by troops of'tlie Fifth Army. 'Che flag Hew’ at the special request of President Roosevelt. The Americans lighting in France celebrated the Fourth of July with tireworks in the traditional manner —but fireworks of a deadly kind, says Reuter’s correspondent with the Americans in Normandy. On General Bradley’s. orders, every artillery gun on the American sector at noon fired at least one round against (lie Germans in celebration ot American independence.
