SOLDIER STOWAWAYS
Boarded N.Z. Troopship (Received July 5, 7 p.m.i SYDNEY, July 5. Two Australian soldiers who wanted Io serve abroad went aboard a troopship with New Zealand troops at. a Western Australian port. They reported to an ollieer after they got to sea. Trooper G. E. Dowling, aged 23, and Trooper It. J. I*. Diane, aged 26, have been charged before a district court-mar-tial with having been absent without leave from January 26 to May 1. 'The soldiers, who pleaded not guilty, said they enlisted in a unit in the belief that they would be sent overseas. The unit had been kepi in Australia 2A years doing what amounted to garrison duty. Ata Western Australian port they became friendly with some New Zealand troops who were returning to the Middle East, and decided to join them. The Australians were given ditties on the troopship, and at Bombay the provost marshal had them sent back to Australia. The Court, did not announce its decision.
