I‘ossibly Hie biggest mass christening celebrated at Hie Bay of Islands since ihe earliest missionary days took place at Russell on Saturday. The move originated with a few mothers in Russell who wished to have their children christened. Others, wore Ihen invited and eventually 28 candidates for baptism were forthcoming. Thev ranged from infants to 11-vcar-olds and came from a wi 1 1 oly-sca 11 e red a rca. The ceremony, which was performed by the vicar of Kawakawa. was impressive.' the children awaiting their (urns at the font with patience ami decorum. After the ceremony a christening party was held. The central feature was a cake containing live eivndle.s for the tiny babies ami 23 arranged in an outer circle for the remainder.
