OBITUARY

Mr. G. M. Evans The death occurred iu Wanganui recently of Mr. George Maurice Evans, uncle'of Laron Strathspey, /Jiief of the' clan Grant, ami a kinsman of Lord Carbery. He was in his 89th year. The last surviving son of the late Major G. T. Evans, of “Ashhill Towers.” Limerick, he crime to New Zealand with his parents in the sailing ship Surat in IStiS. the family taking up hind in the Oamnru district. His two brothers. Messrs. Eyre and Trevor Evans, had arrived two years earlier in the sailing ship Queen Bee. Mr. Evans was well known years ago in South Island racing circles as a successful trainer and owner. His sister Nina, the late Dowager Countess of Seafield, was the wife of Mr. Ogilvie Grant, of Oamarii. who succeeded to the title as the tenth earl in ISSS. but died six months later. The Utirott of Carbery belongs to the Irish peerage, dating back to 1715. For the past 15 years,, following a twoyear visit til Great Britain, .Mr. Evans had lived with his nephew. Air. Percy Evans. Nelson Street. Wanganui.

Mr. William Abbot (George) Weekes, of Maxwell's Line, Awapuni, died yesterday, says a Press Association telegram from Palmerston North. On September 2(> next he would have been 103 years old. He was'born in Devonshire and eame to New Zealand ns a member of ji shin's crow. but. attracted by Hie possibilities of settling here, he deserted ami lived for many years under the name of George Hickle. lie used to relate with itmiiseinenf that even his wife did not know she was to be Mrs. Weekes till a few days before the wedding. Following tiis landing at: Wellington in LSSfI, he worked on the South Island railway construction and then enme north to Awapuni to take up land. He also did contracting work. He is survived by live sons and one daughter of the original family of sixleen. Mrs. Weekes died J 7 .'ears ago. l-'.mr years aw Mr. Weekes went suddenly blind.
